According to Hindu belief, Lord Brahma creates the universe, Lord Shiva dissolves it, and Lord Vishnu preserves and balances it in between. He resides on the serpent Sheshnag's bed in the Ksheersagar, and whenever righteousness comes under threat, he takes on some form of incarnation to protect it.
His ten principal incarnations, the Dashavatar, are considered to be Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha, and Kalki, of which Rama and Krishna receive independently extensive worship of their own. In his Narasimha form, he slew Hiranyakashipu to protect his devotee Prahlad, and in his Vamana form, he humbled the pride of King Bali by asking for three paces of land.
His four hands hold the Sudarshan Chakra, a conch, a mace, and a lotus, and his vehicle is Garuda. The Ekadashi tithi is considered especially dear to him, which is why his vrat is observed on both Ekadashis of every month, and he is also worshipped through the Satyanarayan Katha and the Satyanarayan Vrat.
