Lord Krishna was born in the Dwapar Yuga in a Mathura prison at midnight on Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami, the day celebrated every year as Janmashtami. To protect him from his uncle Kansa's tyranny, he was sent to Gokul, where he performed many childhood deeds including the slaying of Putana, and led the people of Vraj to worship the Govardhan hill instead of Indra.
Grown, he returned to Mathura to slay Kansa, established the city of Dwarka in the sea, and, seeing his friend Arjuna overcome with confusion on the battlefield of the Mahabharata, delivered the Bhagavad Gita, still regarded today as the supreme text of life's philosophy.
In Vrindavan, his love for Radha Rani is regarded as the supreme symbol of devotion and divine love, and the sound of his flute remains central to devotional music and dance traditions such as Raslila even today. In the Mahabharata, he guided the Pandavas through the righteous war as Arjuna's charioteer, which is why he is also called 'Yogeshwar' (Lord of Yoga).
