Lord Rama was born in the Treta Yuga to King Dashrath and Mata Kaushalya of Ayodhya, on the Navami tithi of the Chaitra month, the day celebrated every year as Ram Navami. He incarnated to free the earth from Ravana's tyranny, and through a lifetime of upholding truth, dharma, and propriety, earned the title 'Maryada Purushottam', the ideal man.
He married Sita, daughter of King Janak of Mithila, after breaking Shiva's bow, the event remembered as Vivah Panchami. Diwali itself is celebrated in joy of his return to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile, Sita's abduction, the victory over Lanka, and the slaying of Ravana.
His three brothers, Lakshman, Bharat, and Shatrughna, are regarded as ideals of brotherly love and sacrifice, and Shri Hanuman is worshipped as his greatest devotee and servant. His reign after returning to Ayodhya came to be called 'Ram Rajya', still used today as a byword for just, prosperous, and ideal governance.
