Shri Hanuman was born on Chaitra Purnima to Mata Anjani and father Kesari, the day celebrated as Hanuman Jayanti. As a child, he once tried to swallow the sun mistaking it for a fruit, and Indra's thunderbolt struck his jaw ('hanu') in response, the very event that gave him the name 'Hanuman'.
In the Ramayana, he crossed the ocean to Lanka in search of Mata Sita, fetched the Sanjeevani Booti to save Lakshman's life, and gave Lord Rama unwavering support in the slaying of Ravana. It is for this unshakeable devotion and courage that he is regarded as Sankat Mochan and foremost among Rama's devotees.
Born with the blessing of the wind god Vayu, he is also called 'Pawanputra' (son of the wind), and he attained his learning by taking Lord Surya as his guru. A lifelong celibate worshipped as the ideal of service, humility, and strength, he is also worshipped in his five-faced (Panchmukhi) form in many places, symbolizing his all-encompassing protective power.
