According to legend, when the demon Mahishasura terrorized the three worlds with his might and could not be defeated by any god, Goddess Durga manifested from the combined radiance of all the gods, and after a fierce nine-day battle, slew Mahishasura. This very victory is commemorated as Navratri and Vijayadashami.
Goddess Durga is worshipped in nine forms (Navdurga), namely Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri, each worshipped on one of the nine days of Navratri.
It is believed that before the battle, every god gave Goddess Durga a weapon of their own, such as Lord Shiva's trishul, Lord Vishnu's chakra, and Indra's vajra, so that she could be fully armed to fight Mahishasura. Many of her forms, such as Kali, Ambe, and Katyayani, are worshipped across different regions of India under different names and traditions, and Durga Puja in West Bengal is regarded as her grandest celebration.
