According to a well-known legend, Mata Parvati created a boy from the paste of her own body and set him to guard her door. In an unintended conflict with Lord Shiva, the boy's head was severed, and Lord Shiva later revived him by fitting an elephant's head in its place, which is why Ganesha is also called 'Gajanan' (elephant-faced).
Ganesha earned the boon of being worshipped first when the gods competed to see who could circle the earth fastest: Ganesha simply circled his parents, considering them his entire universe, and won through this wisdom. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated as his birth festival, and Anant Chaturdashi as the day of his immersion (visarjan).
While writing down Sage Vyasa's rapidly spoken verses during the composition of the Mahabharata, Ganesha's pen broke, so he snapped off one of his own tusks to keep writing without pause, which is why he is also called 'Ekdanta' (one-tusked). His two consorts, Riddhi (prosperity) and Siddhi (accomplishment), are always worshipped alongside him, and Lord Kartikeya is his younger brother.
