Khatu Shyam is regarded as the very form of Barbarik, the son of Ghatotkacha and grandson of Bhima and Hidimba, an unmatched warrior since childhood who had received three infallible arrows from his mother, capable of ending any battle in an instant.
During the Mahabharata war, Barbarik had vowed to fight on the side that was losing, and Lord Krishna, recognizing that this would unbalance the war's outcome, took the form of a Brahmin and asked him to donate his head in charity. Barbarik offered his head without hesitation, which is why he is also called 'the giver of his own head'.
Pleased by his sacrifice, Lord Krishna granted him the boon that in the Kali Yuga he would himself be worshipped under Krishna's own name, 'Shyam', and that anyone who came to him with a sincere heart would surely receive his help. This is why he is called 'the support of the hopeless', and his chief temple in Khatu village, Sikar district, Rajasthan, remains a center of devotion for devotees across the country.
