Worshipped since Vedic times, Lord Surya is described in the Vedas as the source of life, light, and energy for all creation. His chariot is drawn by seven horses, said to symbolize the seven colours of sunlight, and driven by his charioteer Aruna. His two consorts are Sanjna and Chhaya, and Yamraj, Yamuna, Shani Dev, and the Ashwini Kumars are his children.
Ratha Saptami is celebrated as his day of manifestation, while Makar Sankranti marks Surya's entry into Capricorn and the start of Uttarayan. In Chhath Puja, both the setting and the rising sun are worshipped alongside Chhathi Maiya, regarded as one of the most rigorous vow traditions dedicated to Surya.
His son Shani Dev is regarded as a just dispenser of karmic reward and consequence, and Lord Rama himself received the 'Aditya Hridaya Stotra' from sage Agastya and recited it in praise of Surya before his battle with Ravana.
