Chapter 1 · Chhaya's Penance, and Shani's Birth
Lord Surya was married to Sanjna, daughter of Vishwakarma, but Sanjna could not bear Surya's intense radiance for long. So she created a shadow-being identical to herself, named her 'Chhaya,' and appointed her to serve Surya in her place while she herself withdrew for penance. Chhaya fulfilled the duties of Surya's wife in Sanjna's place for years, and it was during this time that a son named Shani was born to her.

It was this severe austerity, combined with continuous exposure to Surya's fierce radiance, that gave Shani his deeply dark complexion, and according to another popular telling, a curse Chhaya uttered in anger during one childhood act of defiance is also why his gait remained slow and uneven ever after.
Chapter 2 · The Father's Suspicion, and Shiv's Boon
When Surya saw his son's dark complexion, he grew suspicious that the child was not truly his own, and even questioned Chhaya's fidelity. Both the child Shani and his mother Chhaya were deeply wounded by this scornful doubt and neglect. Stung by this insult, Chhaya resolved that her son would one day prove himself even more powerful and venerated than Surya himself.
Resolved to fulfill his mother's wish, the child Shani began fierce penance to Lord Shiv, continuing for years without food or water. Pleased by his unwavering devotion and austerity, Lord Shiv appeared and granted him the boon that his standing among the nine planets would be supreme, and that the influence of his gaze and his dasha would fall equally upon gods, demons, and mortals alike, without favoring anyone.
Because of this boon, Shani Dev is regarded with both awe and reverence even among the gods, worshipped not as a punisher but as the impartial deity of justice. It is in memory of this very birth date, the Amavasya of the Jyeshtha month, that Shani Jayanti is observed every year, when devotees perform an abhishek of mustard oil and give alms in an effort to please him.
