Significance of Dattatreya Jayanti
According to legend, sage Atri's wife, Mata Anasuya, was renowned for her devotion and penance as a chaste wife. To test her, at the request of goddesses Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Parvati, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva themselves took the form of mendicants and arrived at her ashram, placing an unusual condition for alms.
By the power of her penance, Mata Anasuya fulfilled that condition in a way that caused no harm to the three gods, and through the power of her austerity, transformed them into infants, cradling them. When the wives of the three gods, unable to find their husbands, grew anxious, they themselves came to Mata Anasuya seeking forgiveness.
Pleased, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva granted Mata Anasuya the boon that all three would be born as her son. As a result of this boon, Lord Dattatreya, the combined form of the Trimurti, was born, regarded as the Adi Guru and the founder of the Avadhoot tradition.
