Ramanathaswamy Temple, Rameswaram

It is believed that before his victory over Lanka, Lord Rama worshipped Shiva here to seek release from the sin of killing a Brahmin (Ravana). This is the only Jyotirlinga where Vishnu's avatar Rama himself worshipped Shiva, which is why it is held equally sacred by both Shaivite and Vaishnavite traditions.

The temple is also known for its world-famous corridor, with about 4,000 carved pillars stretching across roughly 1,200 metres, making it the longest temple corridor in the world. The chain of shoals in the sea known as Ram Setu (Adam's Bridge) is traditionally linked to the bridge Lord Rama and his army of Vanaras built to cross to Lanka.

Rameswaram Temple sits within the island town connected by the Pamban Bridge, making it easier to reach than many other remote or island shrines. Before darshan, pilgrims traditionally bathe in the 22 sacred wells (theerthams) located within and around the temple complex.

Near the temple lies Dhanushkodi, an abandoned coastal stretch believed to be where the Ram Setu chain begins in the sea. Given the coastal climate, visiting between October and April is most comfortable.
