Bhimashankar Temple

It is believed that the demon Tripurasura performed intense penance to Shiva and won the boon of immortality, but over time began tormenting gods and humans alike. At the gods' plea, Shiva appeared here in a massive (bhima) form and, together with Parvati as Ardhanarishvara, slew Tripurasura. It is this massive form that gives the Jyotirlinga its name, Bhimashankar.

It is believed that the sweat that poured from Shiva's body during this fierce battle gave rise to the Bhima river, later known as the Chandrabhaga at Pandharpur. Bhimashankar is one of Maharashtra's three Jyotirlingas (along with Trimbakeshwar and Aundha Nagnath), and its setting amid the dense Sahyadri forest gives it special natural significance as well.

The temple sits in a small valley at Bhimashankar village, so after reaching the parking area by road, a short flight of steps leads down to the temple itself. Dense forest surrounds the temple, part of the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, known in particular for protecting the rare Indian giant squirrel (Shekru).

Adventure travellers can also reach Bhimashankar via the Ganesh Ghat or Shidi Ghat route from the Karjat side, a 4-6 hour trek through dense forest, this isn't necessary for regular pilgrims, but is a popular additional option for trekking enthusiasts.
