Chapter 1 · Charumati's Dream Vision and the Boon
It is said that in ancient times, in the very heart of the kingdom of Magadha, there stood a city named Kundi, said to have come into being by the grace of heaven. There, in a Brahmin household, lived a woman named Charumati, who led the life of an ideal wife, faithfully serving her parents-in-law and husband and worshipping Mata Lakshmi every day.
Satisfied by her devotion, Devi Lakshmi herself descended into her dream one night and told her of a vow called 'Varalakshmi', explaining that performing it would fulfil her every heartfelt wish.
Chapter 2 · The Vrat's Worship and Its Fruit
As soon as she awoke the next morning, Charumati gathered the neighbouring women together and performed the Varalakshmi Vrat's worship in due form, exactly as the goddess had instructed. When the worship was over and all the women began circling the kalash, gold ornaments appeared of their own accord upon each of their bodies as they walked around it.
At the same time, their homes turned to gold, and their courtyards filled with horses, elephants, cows, and other livestock. Everyone credited this wonder to Charumati, since it was she who had taught them the vow's method. In time, this same story came to be told by Lord Shiva to Mata Parvati, and it is believed that even merely hearing it brings the grace of Devi Lakshmi.

On the last Friday of Shravan, bathe and set up a kalash, place a coconut and cloth upon it, invoke Mata Varalakshmi, and worship her according to due rites while listening to this katha. After the worship, circle the kalash and offer items of suhaag.
