According to a well-known legend, when Lord Shiva took a fierce form to humble Lord Brahma's arrogance, one of Brahma's five heads was severed in the process. To be freed from the resulting sin of Brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin), Bhairav was compelled to wander for years as a mendicant with the skull in hand, a penance that ended only upon reaching Kashi, which is why he is regarded as Kashi's guardian and 'kotwal'.
The Kaal Bhairav Mandir in Ujjain is among his most famous shrines, known for the unique tradition of devotees offering liquor to him, which is believed to be directly absorbed by the deity, an experience widely regarded as astonishing among devotees.
Eight forms of Bhairav, known as the Ashta Bhairav, are worshipped, ranging from the gentle Batuk Bhairav, especially favored by students, to the fierce Kaal Bhairav. His vehicle is the dog, which is why feeding dogs is considered an auspicious way to please him. Kalabhairav Jayanti, observed on Margashirsha Krishna Ashtami, marks his day of manifestation.
